Christmas
I hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas. For me Christmas is the time for relaxation, calming down, enjoying peace and quiet and spending time with your family. It's my favorite holiday of the year and I love the spirit of it. There is just something magical about Christmas. All the beautiful lights in the dark, cheerful Christmas music, peaceful time and relaxation with your family.I love seeing all my friends and relatives and enjoying delicious foods and wine while forgetting all the worries and hassle of everyday life. I think the most important thing about Christmas is to spend some time with your loved ones and calm down. We all need that sometimes.
The life is so hectic nowadays and we are trapped into the fuss about all the errands and working life we have. The jobs and school are getting more demanding all the time, there is people everywhere, schedules are being tight and modern technology and social media are also taking a big part of our time. We might have deadlines, things to do or errands to run...Christmas preparations take a lot of time and you still should take care of your work, family, social relations...oh and you should still have time to go to the gym, clean up,do the laundry and....the list is endless. What about after Christmas, all the wrapping papers need to be cleaned off the floors and leftovers need to be used for something, did everyone like their gift? Oh and how about all the chocolate you ate, you definitely have to start working out tomorrow and only eat lettuce! Does that sound familiar?Even a bit? We all have been there. The hectic lifestyle of today is tiring us without us even noticing it. People are busy, angry and irritated while trying to do so many things at the same time and pleasing everyone. Christmas is great time to let go all of that and just focus on the most important thing about life, family and love.
I just visited my 92 years old grandma today and she told me how things were when she was young. The Christmas preparations required a lot of work. All the Christmas foods were made from scratch and the Christmas preparations took for a while since everything was made by themselves. They had few cows that they needed for milk and a horse for transportation.Besides of taking care of the animals they had a big family of many children to take care of while preparing Christmas and doing all the other everyday work around the house. The whole family lived in a one room house located on an island in the middle of a lake and during winter time they crossed the lake by walking on the ice. They needed to be careful not to choose the wrong route and walk to the spots where the ice was too thin. Sometimes those sports were right next to their route and my grandma told me how a can of milk fell off her sled once and sank on the bottom of the lake breaking the ice right next to her. Their life was a struggle but they were happy. They didn't have fancy gifts or modern decorations for their Christmas celebrations but they had a loving family which was everything they needed. Despite all the hard work, they were enjoying their Christmases and their life was good.
That was an eye opening conversation and I think we could learn a thing or two from the elderly and the way of life they had back then. We should focus more on the non-material things about life and appreciate the things we have. When is actually the last moment when you have paid attention to the things you have right? Or the nice moment that made you happy and feel good? Have you even been thinking of that?
So do youself a favor and stop for a while if you haven't done that already. Notice all the little good things around you. Maybe they are snow covered trees, or a candle light in the dark. Maybe they are nice words of your loved one or a gentle touch of someone you care about. Maybe only even the silence of the Christmas night and the relaxing moment you have. Focus on the moment. Forget all the worries you have and be present, everything else can wait. Have a deep breath and enjoy. Nothing else is as important as this, your moment of relaxation. Appreciate all the things you have and respect the loved ones that belong into your life. Maybe it's a good moment to update your priorities for the next year, to focus on the most important things of your life and let some extra stress to go. Maybe that could be your new year's resolution,to think what really matters and have a little bit less stressful new year. At least I could use that myself. So be good, love often and enjoy your holidays! Have a merry Christmas everyone!
